Data collected by Earth Observation (EO) satellites is one of the most important assets of Space Science, providing valuable information for understanding, monitoring, modelling and thus protecting the environment. Among many applications of EO, urban studies have been made a necessity, since the majority of the Earth’s population is gathering in cities. The increasing availability of EO satellite systems and techniques increases the opportunities for monitoring the urban environment. The combined use of EO data with physical numerical modelling, has the potential to provide spatio-temporal distributions of urban environmental parameters capable of supporting advanced urban studies.
EO4SEB wil review existing EO systems and state-of-the-art methods reviewed to identify their capabilities and limitations in supporting Surface Energy Balance (SEB) modelling. EO analysis products will be used to parameterize the SEB model DARTEB, being developed by CESBIO.
The synergy between EO data and DARTEB, to be achieved in EO4SEB, will be used to explore the effects of the land cover/use driven energy exchanges to urban climate at local and regional scales.
